Soooo good! - I m not a huge rock fan, and I do find many of the tracks on Morissette s new CD are such, yet I am still completely in love with this album. There s just enough mix of Morissette s unique voice entangled with funky techno or rockin electric guitar. I wouldn t listen to this CD with my young kids, but it s awesome for exercising to. The first track called Citizen of the Planet is by far my favourite on this album. But I also enjoy Underneath, Strait Jacket, and Versions of Violence as well. Heck, I love all the songs. I just finished reading a bunch of interviews from Morissette s website . I am so pleasantly surprised how insightful and thought-provoking she is.
ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT! - Throughout history the concept of the tortured artist is nothing new and down through the ages some of the most gifted painters, sculptors, authors and musicians have walked that fine line between genius and insanity. Given that, it s no surprise that angst and passion can lead one to the absolute heights of inspiration. Alanis Morissette says that each album she releases is a snapshot of periods of time in her life so I guess a backhanded thank you has to go to actor Ryan Reynolds because the parting of the ways with Alanis has given her, in part, the fuel that lit this incredible fire, one of passion, introspection and absolute brilliance. Having said that, this is not a downer album, in fact, right from the start with Citizen of the Planet there s something here that is almost indescribable yet still carries a familiar, almost exotic resonance. It s reminiscent of an Evanescence song. The next song, Underneath was the first single released and this is pure Alanis and as familiar as a welcomed old friend. An interesting point is the fact that this CD is on Madonna s Maverick label and there are moments that mirror the Material Girl in a big way, Straitjacket, Versions of Violence and Moratorium could all fit perfectly on Madonna s Ray of Light CD. Interestingly enough, Guy Sigsworth, who has worked with Madonna in the past, produced this album. For all intents and purposes though, this is pure Alanis. There s a river of melancholy magic running through Not As We and Torch bears all the scars of a totally broken heart but Giggling Again for No Reason is joyful and light-hearted and hints at a resurrection and healing. This CD probably won t hit the same high sales marks that Jagged Little Pill set, it s hard to top such a worldwide mega-successful album, but this is definitely the best one Alanis has ever recorded. The sheer brilliance of Versions of Violence and Underneath alone makes this CD worth buying and the other amazing songs just help to further prove that point. It s a truly amazing collection.
Outstanding Release by Alanis Morissette - I ll be brief. This is by far one of the best releases of 2008. Alanis Morissette s latest is outstanding in every regard. The songs are heartfelt testimonies to loss, love, friendship, heartbreak, release, redemption, forgiveness, and sorrow at things imagined, but never realized. The production is superb, the CD holds wonderfully well as a song cycle, and Alanis has never sounded better. Five stars all the way!
One who hears the cries of the world - I am a citizen of the planet My laws are all of attraction My punishments are consequences Separating from source the original sin (Alanis Morissette - Citizen of the Planet) Back when I started reviewing on Amazon.com, I was asked to name my favorite artistes, and without pausing I chose Alanis Morissette and Queen. Well, many years later, Freddy Mercury s passed on, but Alanis still reigns. Her music and lyrics are intelligent, thought provoking, honest, and most definitely non-mainstream and anti-karaoke. The album starts off with Citizen of the Planet a track with a Middle Eastern vibe, and a shout out to Kwan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess whose name means One who hears the cries of the world. The second track is the first single Underneath, a mid-tempo track with a soaring chorus about people who aren t communicating effectively. This is emphasized when she sings Look at us jumping ship in our dialogues. An excellent track by any yardstick. Other noteworthy tracks are Straitjacket (PA lyrics, bass heavy dance beat on the chorus), Versions of Violence (one of my favorites, rock beat), Not As We (plaintive piano-backed ballad), Moratorium (classic Morissette), Torch and Giggling Again for no Reason (simply beautiful - music, lyrics, everything). The album closes with the second single Incomplete, an Alanis-styled ballad and second shortest track, where she seems to describe her career when she sings Ever unfolding / Ever expanding / Ever adventurous and torturous / But never done Another great album, no filler material, and definitely a keeper. Amanda Richards
